What is classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates refers to the series of exercises Joseph Pilates invented in the early 20th century.  The order that the exercises are performed in remains largely the same each time, with a few exceptions made for skill level and physical constraints.  This repetition allows the body to utilise muscle memory, and subsequently as the body flows through the movements, allows the student to focus deeper on form.

I have health issues or injuries, can I still do Pilates?

As long as your Doctor or health professional say it’s okay, yes.  Pilates is largely used as physical rehabilitation and is widely regarded to be helpful with alleviating back issues.  Some physical and health issues may not be suitable for group instruction.  Please contact us to discuss which session is right for you.

Do I need to book?

All classes are available to drop in if there’s space available, however booking is highly recommended.  You can book through MindBody here.  One to ones and duets must be booked in advance.

How long are classes?

All classes and sessions are 50 minutes.

Do I need to bring my own mat?

All equipment is provided.

Is it like yoga?

Sort of.  Pilates and yoga are similar in the sense that they both promote flexibility and strength and allow a connection between mind and body.  However, Pilates relies on constant, flowing movement as opposed to held poses.

Do men do Pilates?

Absolutely — Joseph Pilates, the inventor, was a man!  Pilates offers the same benefits to men as it does women.  In recent years, there has been significant research done into the benefits of Pilates for athletes in contact sports and reduction of injury.  Here at Focus we have extensive experience in this – if you belong to a sports team and would like further information, please contact us here.

What is the difference between mat classes and equipment classes?

Joseph Pilates developed the mat order to strengthen the core muscles using your own body weight and gravity as resistance.  The equipment was developed to deepen the work by adding resistance to the muscles using springs.

How often should I do Pilates?

If Pilates is your sole choice of exercise, 2-4 times per week is recommended.  For those who are very active and already exercise regularly, doing Pilates even once a week will enhance your current workout regime.

What do I wear?

Wear something you are comfortable moving about in. Most students wear exercise pants or shorts (what are ‘yoga pants’ called?) or leggings, and a vest or t-shirt. Pilates is done barefoot, however you are welcome to wear socks if you prefer.

I’m new to Pilates, where should I begin?

Ideally, if you are new to Pilates, private instruction is useful to help understand the basics and fundamentals at your own pace.  We offer a starter pack which includes one to ones, however we understand that this isn’t always feasible due to cost or time. Beginner equipment classes or all level mat classes are suitable for those with no previous Pilates experience and new students are always warmly welcomed. Please arrive a few minutes early to your first class or session to fill out a health form and liability waiver.

Why should I do Pilates?

The benefits of Pilates are endless. Increased strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, body awareness, control… to name a few!

What if I don’t love it straight away?

Pilates is a process. Some students love it immediately, for others it’s a slow burner.  The first session can be overwhelming – we highly encourage giving it more than one try if you’re not hooked right away. Joseph Pilates said that in 10 sessions you’ll feel a difference, in 20 you’ll see a difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.

Can you come to my business?

Yes!  As the focus on healthy workplaces increases, many businesses are introducing group fitness classes on site.  These contribute greatly to employees’ overall health and well-being.  Please contact us if you’re interested in having group Pilates classes taught at your workplace.

What’s your refund policy?

Unused classes or sessions can be refunded to the original payment method within 48 hours of purchase, unless the class purchased takes place within 12 hours of booking. Group class reservations (Mat and Equipment) must be cancelled within 12 hours of class time or you will charged the full amount of the class.
